Mamma Mia! New Drama Club comes to RMS
4/20/2023 12:29 pm
Come support SHS students and enjoy a wonderful evening/afternoon of entertaining and fun musical theater! This spring the Saratoga High School students are excited to showcase their talent, hard work and enthusiasm in a crowd favorite musical, Mamma Mia! - Story of a young woman desperately trying to find her birth father in the midst of getting married. When her 3 possible dads show up for her wedding and all agree to walk her down the aisle, old loves are rekindled while new loves are ignited. A jukebox musical written by British playwright Catherine Johnson, based on songs recorded by Swedish group ABBA and composed by Benny Andersson and Björn Ulvaeus, members of the band. Directed by Ben Brotzman.
AND NOW, ABOUT OUR EXCITING NEW DRAMA CLUB COMING TO RMS!
Our dear friends at the high school and drama booster club Saratoga Theatre Arts (STA) have been trying to help us start a Drama Club at RMS for several years. We are going to start one now! The first meeting is on Friday, April 28th (next week) from right after school until 5pm. We have just been confirmed to use the Flex Room at RMS. A big ‘thank you’ to Ms. Hsieh who will be the official RMS Drama Club advisor.
There is no donation ask for Drama Club for the rest of this school year. Our friends at Saratoga Theatre Arts are paying for our kickoff expenses!!!! However, we do need everyone to sign up at the PTA website so that we can capture all of the emergency information, just in case. The direct link to sign up is here: https://www.redwoodmiddlepta.org/packet/16655
On 4/28 we’ll be doing a few things:
- Adopting a the ITS constitution and bylaws so that our RMS Drama Club can be a junior ITS troupe under our parent high school troupe: See here - https://docs.google.com/document/d/1lEbMnWewaJPl_m1Mau0ylLaBaSTXAbIC/edit
- Hearing from some Saratoga High School Drama Club officers about how the high school Drama Club works and about the possible pathway from the middle school to the high school.
- Asking our interested 6th and 7th graders if they want to be officers from now until next April (2024). Students will be elected based on a 1-minute speech to their fellow students about their commitment to the responsibilities of the office. The main officers we will need are –
- President - The president makes sure that all meetings stay organized, and creates committees to help with the troupe's activities
- Vice President - The vice president helps the president, and is responsible for helping to induct new members
- Secretary - The secretary keeps a record of the meetings
- Treasurer - The treasurer helps plan and keeps a record of all of the requested expenses for the troupe's activities
- Clerk/Scribe - The clerk keeps the point records of all activities: plays, production dates, casts, crews, and work accomplished as provided in the official point system
- Other officers such as webmaster, theatre advocacy chair, publicity chair, etc. may be added to the troupe’s constitution at the troupe’s discretion.
- Asking the students to start to brainstorm a major Drama Club activity for next year in addition to the musical. We will actually vote on and schedule these activities towards the end of May and during our final June meeting.
- Talking about some changes to next year’s musical (see below)
- Playing some drama games.
Starting on 5/5, our friends at Saratoga Theatre Arts have helped us hire a Drama coach who will work with our students every Friday in May. You can see the schedule here: https://www.redwoodmiddlepta.org/dramaclub
